Essential Medicine (+ follow-on Essential OSCE): Intense essential learning based on common and must know exam questions

Interactive quizzes - really nice and easy-to-use [live MCQ questions] platform. It was great to have some insider tips about OSCE and how best to make use of time for preparing and also whilst actually in the stations. Very useful handout to read before hand and great use of time over the two days spread over the topics. Really appreciated it thank you so much!!! Fantastic weekend thank you! (5/5 - excellent)

Essential OSCE: A comprehensive breakdown of year 3 clinical skills and technique

The enthusiasm and energy from deeban really kept me engaged; I thought all of the resources were excellent and the course content was explained thoroughly and in a way that was easy to understand. I really enjoyed this course and I am very glad that I came - I think its been really useful and I'm feeling much more confident for my OSCEs now than I had been before.

Lauren, third year, KCL - EO 2018

This course has been a fantastic and thorough overview of high yield topics in third year. Deeban has put great thought in to making things accessible and helping us understand what examiners are expecting in OSCEs. Just to say thank you so very much for all the time, effort and energy that Deeban and everyone involved have put in to making this course the fantastic and useful experience it was for all of us third year medical students :)

Sophia Cotterell, T Yr, SGUL - EO 2018

I thoroughly enjoyed this weekend. What I found most useful was the level at which it was pitched; Dr Ratneswaran gave us enough detail to excel in the OSCE whilst not overloading us with information. I also felt that this OSCE weekend complemented Essential medicine very well and I will be sure to come back for 4th and final year revision weekends, overall an excellent course! I have been very impressed with your oratory skills Deeban and the handouts* made were very useful, great work.

Amal Boulbadaoui, year 3, KCL - EO 2018
*Note from organisers - the above referenced handout was the combined work of: Dr Culadeeban Ratneswaran, Dr Maiyuran Ratneswaran, Dr Kevin Dodd, Dr Murtaza Khadum, Dr Taimur Shafi, Dr Puja Mistry, Ahmad Guni BSc, Sachan Maruthan BSc.

THE WHOLE COURSE WAS SO GOOD! Going through cases and discussing them really helped consolidate my knowledge!

Priyal Taribagil UCL - Year 4, EO 2018

I loved how you didnt throw too much info at us but just made sure that we understood what you did teach us wiyh interactive examples. Your tone and style of presenting is extremely enganging and this is the only lecture in three years that ive stayed awake for! I also liked the use of double screen, how you went through all the answers on the screen and was funny!! I also liked the snacks, breaks and free stationary! I actually forgot a notepad. Location is amazing too! Amazing at presenting, really engaging, thorough and efficient at imparting knowledge and ensuring we understood before we moved on. Extremely inspiring as an individual!!

Deeban is super enthusiastic and knowledgable. This course was so helpful! I've learnt so much!

Katherine, 3rd Year, King's College London - EO 2018

Very interactive, went through a lot of cases and examples. We had a chance to present back to either the person sitting next to us or to other people in the class. Also I’m a phyisician associate and this is helpful for our course and our matrix. I’ve travelled from leeds to come to the course because I heard how good it was from a friend, perhaps you could advertise to universities up north or advertise to PAs across the universities because it is definitely beneficial for our National Exam that we have to sit in September and our university exams. Brillant course! really enjoyed today, thank you!

Andrea, University of Leeds - EO 2018

The clinical signs we are most likely to encounter were explained in an extremely well organised manner. There's so many conditions that we can read about in the books, making the year somewhat overwhelming, so it was great to see the commonly tested ones laid out. Deeban was an amazing teacher and was able to keep the group engaged and enthusiastic. Deeban did a great job of mixing basic practical steps with more complex pathophysiology that we will be expected to know. I feel much more prepared to pass (no... conquor!) my exams after this course. Thank you!

We would love to connect with the owner of this feedback? - email us on [email protected]

I would honestly recommend it to anyone who asks and am so glad I came! Please carry on doing it for the next 2/3 years, so me and my friends can come to the ones for 4th and 5th year!

Good at keeping student engaged.

Structured way to take history, presenting practice, eye photos were good too. Thanks for your enthusiasm and support. Makes me feel more confident in what i know and improve what I dont. With 2 weeks to OSCE thats a relief!

Course attendee - EO 2018

What I like most about EO is that it's really holistic, you respond to feedback ASAP e.g. sorting out the air con and you genuinely care that everybody is comfortable and therefore able to absorb as much info as possible. EO has re-structured my approach to history taking and I feel much more competent in doing this after taking this course.

James, Year 5, University College London

"By far one of the best value for money courses out there."

Mahesh Pillai, Year 6, University College London

Very engaging presenter - made me stay awake!

Year 5, King's College London

"Undoubtedly the best trainee we have ever had."

(Consultant physician, London)

I really liked the way he showed us how to get to a differential quickly and how to present them in a confident manner. If we were taught this from the start rather than learning to list peripheral stigmata we would have less trouble in OSCEs. I was focused and listening the whole way through and learnt so much. We covered a lot of topics but it didn’t feel like too much. Really useful OSCE specific tips and viva questions too.

Alexandra Cuenod, Final year, University College London

Such a useful course thank you so much for putting it on! (What did you like most?): All the hints and tips about how to make an impression on the examiner, examples of how to discuss differentials and management plans in a way that demonstrates that you will be a competent F1 and demonstrates more clearly the extent of your knowledge.

Maneesa Jayawardena, Final year, King's College London

It was very interactive. I learnt a lot about how to become slick in osce stations eg how to present back well, differentials etc. We were taught things that we couldn't necessarily get just from reading textbooks. It was so helpful! Thank you

Rachel, Final year medical student, King's College London

What did you like most about the course? The pacing and going over key conditions. Also the focus on presenting so you give the illusion of being confident! oh and management plans!

Sakira Thangavel, Final year, King's College London

Thoroughly enjoyed the course. Feel more confident about approaching the stations and being able to make sense of it. A lot of attention is paid on the 'OSCE' in and around university but nobody really addressed the issue on how piece all the information together and present effectively and efficiently. Osler’s Room did that. Thank you.

Puja Mistry, Final year, Barts and The London

Thorough and comprehensive instruction on the required techniques. Patience in explaining medical concepts and a willingness to repeat material to ensure understanding. Thank you for your time and effort. This course served as an excellent review of the material and primer for my revision studies.

Thomas, Third year, St George's, University of London

"Deeban [Dr Ratneswaran] was super enthusiastic and kept my attention for the whole two days (which is a big challenge!) He was very knowledgeable and managed to simplify all the common exam scenarios through a combination of cases, clear explanations and key points.”

Shruti Jayakumar, Year 5, King's College London

"The course was very interactive and though there were a lot of attendees, there were many opportunities to participate and present cases in front of everyone - honing your skills for the real deal.”

Shruti Jayakumar, Year 5, King's College London

"It was useful to have an experienced clinician go over how to present the important findings as well as reminding us not to waste time regurgitating unnecessary negative findings. In particular the course also helped reinforce how to link findings to the clinical picture and highlighted how even in the presence of minimal signs, we can still have a lot to say. The Dr [Dr Ratneswaran] did a great job keeping the teaching engaging and our spirits high even after 2 days of high intensity recapping."

Mahesh Pillai, Year 6, University College London

Interactive, high spirited, extremely knowledgeable. (Any suggestions for how we could improve?): Nothing! It’s great; thank you!

Medicine 4The Masses: The definitive medical work experience and application boost

Phenomenal insight into the life of a doctor that I had never thought about before

I am feeling really inspired to just learn more about developing myself into a more effective person

Loved the enthusiasm of the tutors. Really seemed like a world class team!

The scenarios were a great aspect of the day as they really allowed to understand the process doctors go through with patients and how teamwork and communication is essential. Great programme.

I understand in much more detail of the role of a doctor and the aspects to consider. Appreciated the first hand experience and knowledge of the speakers today

Feel much more prepared to apply to medicine. This course answered questions for me that I was not even aware myself that I wanted the answers to. As well as gaining new experience, it showed me how I could develop and expand on the previous work experience that I have done. What I liked most, was that while they talked about the hardships of applying for medicine, they also talked about how to overcome these hardships.

This was probably the best medicine related workshop that I have been through thus far

I loved the informal nature and the engagment throughout the day. Very engaging and different course to others I've been on. Really enjoyed it, thank you.

I feel like I have a more comprehensive view of how best to apply for medicine and a better understanding of the work involved in becoming a doctor. The course has helped to clarify ideas and misconceptions, and I feel more prepared for my application for medicine

I have been given a lot of information to include in my personal statement, as well as a look into what being a medical student is like. Doing the different simulation and scenarios showed what you would really be doing as a doctor. I thought that everyone was nice and I learned a lot today about applying and what life as a doctor is like.

The research project as well as other topics such as work experience were really helpful. The course was really focused and was able to hit on key points and information

I enjoyed the entire course immensely and feel that the information was very relevant. Better than I expected! Can't think of anything to improve on

One thing I did not expect to see is the huge workload, once you are in university and a junior doctor. The various trials and tribulations from Dr Deeban Ratneswaran gripped me and made me question whether life as a junior doctor is for me. A doctor has to work very hard, but I was more than motivated by the opportunity to do good. And I realised, I want that: I want to be that. I want to be not only an amazing doctor, but an amazing person, like him.

I feel that I have received a lot of useful advice for each aspect of the application for medicine, from interview techniques to how to improve my personal statement.

Helped build my confidence

Loved all of it. The key points and structures were really handy

VERY helpful, interesting and funny! Intriguing ethical scenarios during the walk throughs which are useful for interviews. Loved the doctor patient communication insight!

Yes, I feel that I know what to talk about in my interview and I am less likely to be out of words. It has helped me to structure my essay and what I need to focus on when I’m at an interview or if I’m writing my personal statement.

It was very insightful and it was good for someone who has gone through the process and been on both ends to tell me where my focus should be and what needs to be done.

I have gained valuble information about the field of medicine and what doctors actually do which I think will facilitate well in my application

I liked the clinical senarios the most as it was nice to work with the doctors to find a suitable solution about what is wrong with the patient coupled with an action plan

I really enjoyed the course, it was really interesting

Amazing course. Thank you so much.

Found it very useful. I liked the addition of the performance coaching and high achiever sections.

The programme allowed me to gain a better insight on the points I can make and the things I should avoid when applying for medicine.

I liked the simulation of clinical cases and the opportunity to submit personal statements for review following the course

I have more experience to include in personal statement/interview and also that I have a clearer idea of how to put my answers and dedication to medicine across.

I found the acute and chronic clinical scenarios the most enjoyable part of the course but also found the interview section incredibly helpful as well.

I feel that I can speak about the experience and knowledge that I have gained from this event, such as making diagnoses, as well as applying this to my personal statement.

Maureen - 2018 course attendee

Really informative and interactive, definitely helped with my personal statement a lot, very thought provoking

I feel much more prepared about applying to medicine

I found the interview section extremely useful and will reflect on it in my personal statement and interview.

In terms of personal statement structure and content, as well as with answering some specific interview questions I feel a lot more prepared for my medical application.

It was structured quite well and remained to the point, also great attempt to cover a large range of topics

I learnt more about the challenges doctors face and the different roles there are

I really do feel way more prepared now on how to start a personal statement and what to put on my personal statrment and other tips and advices overall really helped alot. I feel more confident now.

I now have more experience than I did before, this session has cleared any doubts I had about how to write a personal statement and how to prepare for interviews.

I loved the simulation session about what medication or how would you help a patient with this condition, loved all the course.

I liked the most that it was taught by doctors so realistic opinions were given

Meenashe Suresh - 2018 course attendee

I have learnt a lot about writing personal statements and have an even better idea as to what it is to be a doctor.

I especially enjoyed the simulations of the difference situations a doctor may experience.

I now know what to include to make my personal statement more impactful. I enjoyed the scenarios which doctors face and how to deal with them

The amount of new information that was given by everyone, the interactive sessions and the way all the staff were enthusiastic to help

I feel alot more prepared to apply into medical school and how to actually write my personal statement effectively and what medical school consists of.

It has given me alot more to talk about in interviews and a better understanding of what they’d be like and how to handle them. It has also given me more understanding as to what exactly is looked for in a personal statement

Eveything was very useful but I liked the real life scenarios where the diagnosis was done alongside a doctor so we could see the process. Personal statement and interview section as well

I am more confident on how I should structure and what I need to include in my personal statement. Every element of the course was so detailed and informative.

The talk through simulations, the personal statement workshop and the overall way concepts were broken down in a clear, logical manner. Thank you very much for the experience.
